DWM M1895: Erosion of Field Edges

The two barrel profile videos on this page show the inner surfaces of the barrel of the following weapon:

  • Weapon: DWM M1895
  • Caliber: 7×57
  • Barrel length = 29.3 inches
  • Number of grooves/fields = 4
  • Twist length = 8.66 inches
  • Year of manufacture: 1895
  • Firing load: unknown

The history of this weapon is completely unknown.

The barrel profile videos on the right clearly show both the formation of corrosion scars and the erosion of the field edges.

LA-L (linear axial barrel profile video)

The LA-L shows corrosive changes to the barrel surface in the axial view. The corrosion can be seen across the entire length of the barrel.

RR-L (rotating radial barrel profile video)

In the RR-L, the changes in the surface are now visible from above. These appear to be changes in surface roughness in the form of corrosion scars, similar to those seen on ‘rusty metal surfaces’ after the rust has been removed. At the same time, significant erosion of the field edges can be seen.
