Keppeler K05-F: Special Event
The three barrel profile videos on this page show the inner surfaces of the barrel of the following weapon:
- Weapon: Keppeler K05-F
- Caliber: .284 Win
- Barrel length = 28 inches
- Number of grooves/fields = 6
- Twist length = 8 inches
- Year of manufacture: 2021
- Shot load: approx. 500 shots
The particular feature of this weapon is a special event that occurred during the fire forming of the cases. For this purpose, weak charges with felt as an insulating material were used. A piece of felt got stuck in the barrel and was hit by the felt from the subsequent ‘shot’. This caused local thermal and mechanical stress inside the barrel, which led to slight expansion. The special event is not visible from the outside, but you can feel the spot where it happened when cleaning the barrel: the resistance of the cleaning rod changes as soon as the tip with the patch passes the spot.
No significant effect on shooting performance has been detected yet.
LA-L (linear axial barrel profile video)
At first glance, the LA-L does not show any abnormalities; the barrel appears smooth and shows little wear. However, upon closer inspection, a greyish matt discolouration of the barrel can be seen after 01:26 min (X approx. 300 mm).
RR-L (rotating radial barrel profile video)
With RR-L, you can now follow the grooves/fields from a top view. At 01:26 min, the running surface suddenly appears wavy and no longer smooth.
360R-L (360° radial barrel profile video)
The 360R-L shows 5 X positions at a 360° view:
- X = 6 mm (muzzle): no abnormalities
- X = 299 mm: surface wavy and slightly discoloured
- X = 652 mm (transition cone): no abnormalities
- X = 713 mm (lock near cartridge chamber): no abnormalities
- X = 725 mm (lock near loading port): no abnormalities
